Abstract

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) is caused by common congenitalmalformations in various breeds with increasing popularity. The anatomical changes in BOASresult in airway resistance and contribute to these animals commonly experiencing primary andsecondary respiratory problems in various other systems, often leading to respiratory acidosis.Surgical correction techniques for the syndrome mainly include the correction of stenoticnostrils and elongated and thickened soft palates, procedures that improve life quality and havethe potential to correct the secondary changes the syndrome may have caused. A prospectivestudy is proposed with 10 French Bulldogs who will undergo individually recommendedsurgical correction. The pre and post-operative blood gas changes in these patients will beevaluated, with assessments at seven and thirty days post-surgery, to verify the effectiveness ofthe techniques performed in restoring the acid-base balance of the patients.
