Abstract

This project aims to implement an ultrashort light source in the vacuum ultraviolet, using harmonics generation of femtosecond lasers in noble gases. The project will investigate different fundamental wavelengths (1030 nm, 515 nm, and 343 nm) to drive the harmonic generation process in different noble gases (Ar, Kr, and Xe) aiming to obtain the necessary parameters for the application of this source in photoemission spectroscopies and microscopies in the pump-probe configuration. Photoemission spectroscopies and microscopies are extremely powerful tools for the study of the structure and electronic dynamics of advanced materials. In particular, techniques such as ARPES (angle-resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy) and PEEM (photoelectron emission microscopy) require a light source in the vacuum ultraviolet region (~ 6 to 100 eV) with high photon flux and high spatial coherence. In the pump-probe configuration, these techniques allow the characterization of electronic dynamics on ultra-short temporal scales with energy/crystalline momentum resolution(ARPES) and nanometric spatial resolution (PEEM). The development of the proposed ultrashort VUV light source in this project aims to pave the way for future implementation of ARPES and PEEM techniques with temporal resolution below 200 femtoseconds, still unprecedented in Brazil.
