Abstract

This PD fellowship will contribute to identifying and comprehending the mediations carried out by legal professionals in relation to the broader processes of the reformulation of liberalism, law and democracy in the courts and among legal profession associations; to the processes of international professional circulation, and formal and informal networks of action of these professionals within struggles over the meaning of law and democracy. We thus see the present project as one that can significantly contribute to understanding the relationship between professions, law and democracy in Brazil, and abroad. The researcher will cooperate in mapping and elaborating a dense description of the legal professional arenas, attempting to understand their actual cleavages, that which determines them, and the way in which different subgroups take part in this "tug-of-war" that is central to our concerns. On the other hand, we intend to map the flow of ideas over the axis USA-Brazil, and their effects on the reconfiguration of these professions within Brazil, through the promotion and legitimation of legal doctrines and strategies of a "right-wing" agenda. The proposal recognizes the effects of the globalization of professions but also covers an aspect that is missing from these studies: possibilities for the spread of other models and ideologies besides liberalism, which is centered around the promotion of free markets and civil liberties.
