Abstract

The use of Corrosion Inhibitors (CI) in paints and alloys is an alternative to combat marine corrosion. As such compounds are toxic to aquatic organisms, their replacement with a biological molecules (e.g., sodium gluconate) has been proposed. In addition, the use of these molecules in a nanostructured form has been suggested, aiming at a better efficiency in the anticorrosive action, due to the controlled release of the CI. The objective of this project is to evaluate and understand the responses of biochemical and genotoxic biomarkers in the exposure of marine bivalves of the species Mytillus galloprovincialis to biologically-based anti-corrosive substances (sodium gluconate - SG, and sodium nitrite - NO2) and their forms nanostructured (ZnAl-LDH-SG and ZnAl-LDH-NO2). The project will be carried out at the Aveiro University, Aveiro, Portugal between the months of September 2023 and September 2024. Experiments will be followed lasting 14 days, using adult mussels exposed to different concentrations of SG, NO2, ZnAl-LDH-SG, ZnAl-LDH-NO2, and ZnAl-LDH. Chemical confirmation and bioconcentration factor analyzes will be carried out, as well as analysis of biochemical biomarkers (Glutathione S-transferase, Glutathione peroxidase, Reduced Glutathione, Glutathione Reductase, Lipid Peroxidation, Catalase and Acetylcholinesterase) and genotoxicity (DNA damage and Comet Assay). With the results obtained, it will be possible to compare the results obtained in the project in Brazil with the mussel Perna perna.
