Abstract

The sixth report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicates the intensification of weather and climate extreme events, mainly those related to temperature and precipitation, such as heat waves, droughts and heavy rains. These extreme events, associated with the processes of intensifying social vulnerability in the territory, can lead to disasters with cascading impacts. Given this scenario, how can scientific communication methods be developed to support preparation for weather and climate extreme events? How to develop scientific communication methodologies to implement the UN recommendation of building people-centered warning systems? In search of answers to these questions, the COPETEC Project aims to co-create scientific communication methodologies to support preparation for weather and climate extreme events. COPETEC will work together with the COPE Project team (Capacities of Organizations to Prepare for Extreme Events), which has the support of Fapesp (Grant number 2022/02891-9), to collect, analyze and disseminate the data, information and knowledge based on new methods of scientific communication. The COPE Project has adopted action research methodologies combining questionnaires, interviews, focus groups and participatory workshops. The mobilization of research participants and the dissemination of results have used the Cemaden Webinar Series on YouTube Channel, but it is necessary to enhance scientific communication on the project's Instagram account (@projetocope), which has 192 followers in January 2024. COPETEC will improve these scientific communication actions through data journalism strategies and video production (reels) for social media. COPETEC's proposal is associated with Sustainable Development Goals 11 and 13.
