Abstract

Rotating machines demand a precise understanding of their dynamics to assure safe andhigh performance design. Besides the design study, faults can occur during operation andaffect the system dynamic, hence understanding faults effects on such systems areessential to early detection and to reduce maintenance costs. In this context, monitoringvibration patterns and numerical models are useful to learn and identify fault signatures.Faults associated with hydrodynamic bearings are one of the most common causes offorced shutdowns in rotating machinery. However, a crucial fault known as oil starvationhas not yet been fairly reproduced through simulations and the fault's vibrational signatureis not well reported in literature. Therefore, this project aims to validate a model forpredicting starved bearing behaviour and to experimentally characterize the vibrationsignature of a shaft supported by a starved bearing. A model developed in the candidate'sresearch will be used to represent the oil injection in different oil flow rates, other modelsmay be studied and/or developed to improve simulation representativeness. Vibrationmeasurement will be performed in a test rig to validate the simulations and to analyse thefault signature through spectral analysis.
