Abstract

The long waiting time for elective surgeries is a global challenge, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. This time is prolonged due to the complexity of scheduling these surgeries, which involves factors such as the allocation of operating rooms, the availability of medical teams and the management of cancellations. Fortunately, we can approach this process as an optimization problem, using techniques such as Integer Linear Programming and heuristics, and thus improve the scheduling carried out, often manually, in hospitals, considering all the complexity of the decisions to be made. In this way, this doctoral project aims to develop algorithms to improve the scheduling process for elective surgeries through a partnership with Unicamp's Hospital de Clínicas. This collaboration provides access to real data from a reference hospital and allows the research to be based on real problems.
