Abstract

The dorsal root ganglion (DRG) contains the cell bodies of sensitive neurons. These can be divided into three main categories: nociceptive, mechanoceptive and proprioceptive. The final histological organization of the DRG concentrates the nociceptive neurons in the dorsal region and the others in the ventral region. The dorsal region is exposed to a higher concentration of BMP. The definition of the neuronal category depends on the expression of different isoforms of the Runx transcription factor. Therefore, in this project, we will explore whether Runx expression - and consequently, sensory differentiation - is modulated by BMP signaling. To do this, we use Molecular and Cellular Biology and Optical Microscopy techniques. Specifically, we are going to modify the BMP signaling pathway by overexpressing its components in the embryonic nervous system. The Runx expression pattern of control and experimental samples will be monitored by immunofluorescence.
