Abstract

Implementing biorefineries to replace products and processes obtained from non-renewable raw materials, especially petroleum, with products and processes that use lignocellulosic biomass still requires the development of technologies that allow the full use of these biomasses with economic and energetic potential. From these considerations, this project has as its main objective the inclusion of spent ground coffee, one of the most common residues obtained in coffee shops and which is currently discarded as lignocellulosic raw material. However, there are still barriers related to the availability of monomeric sugars to obtain bioproducts with high added value. Furthermore, the pretreatment step is critical for converting lignocellulosic materials into different bioproducts due to the close association between cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Therefore, the central role of pretreatment is to decrease the interaction between the main components of the cell wall and produce a low amount of by-products. Thus, the present project aims to evaluate operational variables that influence the pretreatment stage of spent ground coffee, using dilute sulfuric acid as a catalyst to obtain the maximum extraction of monosaccharides contained in the hemicellulosic fraction.
