Abstract

Nephrolithiasis, a chronic and recurrent disease, represents a significant burden of morbidity on a global scale. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), a first-line treatment for kidney stones, aims for complete stone elimination (stone-free rate). However, postoperative complications may arise, raising questions about the impact of these clinically relevant variables on patients' quality of life. Generic quality of life questionnaires, such as the SF-12 and SF-36, have historically been used; however, more specific questionnaires like the Cambridge Renal Stone Patient Reported Outcome Measure (CReSP) have been developed for this purpose. Considering both the physician's and patient's perspectives, it would be important to determine whether stone-free rate and a lower incidence of postoperative complications truly and positively influence patients' perceived quality of life.To this end, we will conduct a prospective study with patients diagnosed with kidney stones ranging from 5 to 20 mm undergoing ESWL. Stone-free rate will be assessed via computed tomography performed 30 days after ESWL. We will apply the Clavien-Dindo Classification to grade the severity of complications post-ESWL up to 30 days. Our primary objective is to investigate if there is a direct correlation between patient-perceived quality of life in a specific questionnaire and stone-free rate, and if there is an inverse correlation with the occurrence of postoperative complications. Secondarily, we will analyze responses obtained from the SF-12 and CReSP questionnaires to assess any differences between them.
