Abstract

This research project proposes a reflection on the Brazilian and Argentinean filmography produced throughout the 1980s. The aim is to analyze how the selected films addressed, organized, and interpreted (WILLIAMS, 2011a; 2011c) the issues of the recent dictatorial past, as well as aspects of democratic reconstruction in both countries. By taking the films as the object of analysis, the study seeks to comparatively examine the social fabric of that period of transformations and tensions, focusing on issues related to dictatorship and democratic reconstruction. To achieve this, it will be necessary to construct an analysis concerned with both internal and external aspects of the works (BOURDIEU, 2004). Through qualitative investigation, scenes from the films will be analyzed using the procedures described by Xavier (2019) and Sorlin (1985). Additionally, it is important to map the social backgrounds of the filmmakers, the production companies, and the possibilities for financing, as well as to investigate archives and gather relevant bibliography from both countries. The comparative approach should occur simultaneously with the analysis of the collected material corpus. Finally, it is expected that this investigation will shed light on social elements that become observable only through the knowledge of other realities, pointing out homologies and dissonances between Brazilian and Argentinean societies in the 1980s.
