Abstract

The doctoral research aims to understand how documentaries of the self are constructed in Latin America through their memorialistic relationship with archival materials and spatial articulations. In this proposed research, I start from the documentary construction and narrative selves through space but expand to comprehend how space also serves as "approximation" (BRUZZI, 2022). Thus, I present the hypothesis that space and its ability to relate to different temporalities find, through "approximation," the possibility for archival materials and performance in their memory work to foster the creation of narrative selves in the Latin American documentary. The space that creates and relates meanings, I seek to define, also functions as an "approximation," as it articulates through differences, seeking a different understanding from the initial one, in a movement of reinterpreted and recontextualized layers. Memory work comes into play as the reemployment (and construction of another meaning) of archival materials and the performances in the works function as a rearticulation of space. The narrative, thus, is established through different fields of meaning-making, which together constitute a multifaceted space of memory and the narrative-organizing selves. With a rich construction of meanings, I argue that space establishes itself as a construction that approximates different temporalities, relates, and creates meanings.
