Abstract

Considering the scientifically and politically agreed-upon benchmark for global warming limits, MIS 11 is an excellent case study to investigate the behavior of Earth's climate under globally 2°C warmer-than-preindustrial temperatures. The South Atlantic is particularly important for Earth's climate since it is an enormous heat reservoir and plays a crucial role in the heat transport between both hemispheres. However, the lack of paleoceanographic records hampers the investigation of the behavior of South Atlantic during MIS 11 and its preceding termination (Termination V). Here, we propose to reconstruct South Atlantic sea surface temperatures across MIS 11 and Termination V based on planktonic foraminiferal Mg/Ca analyses in marine sediment cores.
