Abstract

Little is known about how long different types of urban vegetation take to reach their maximum capacity for reducing temperatures. To fill this gap, the advisors of the present project developed a method using remote sensing data that quantifies this period of time, named the Cooling Establishment Time (CET). To increase the scope of the CET concept, this project aims to replicate the methods tested in Zurich for São Paulo, generating insights into their effectiveness in other climatic and urban contexts. It is expected to generate estimates of how long different types of future green areas built in São Paulo would take to reach the peak of their heat mitigation Ecosystem Services. With this, it is hoped to assist decision-makers in selecting the best types of green areas for different situations of greater or lesser climatic urgency by quantifying the temporal dimension of the services generated by these infrastructures.
