Abstract

This BEPE proposal is linked to a postdoctoral research project (FAPESP 2022/03365-9), whose objective is to characterize, from a geochemical, petrological, and geochronological perspective, the Early Cretaceous mafic magmatism currently recognized in the South-Central region of Brazil, where it is correlated to the Paraná-Etendeka LIP. The target events consist of mafic dike swarms, regionally known as the Transminas and Vitória dikes, although other smaller swarms have also been considered for geochronological dating. It is intended, therefore, to apply high-precision dating techniques such as U-Pb in zircon (CA-ID-TIMS) and in situ mineral analyses by ICP-MS. These analyses will be carried out at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich), which is a renowned higher education institution and a reference center for the techniques to be used. In a broader perspective, the new data will allow establishing correlations between large igneous provinces in the context of the South Atlantic and foster geodynamic models for the breakup of the western Gondwana supercontinent during the Early Cretaceous.
