Abstract

The research consists of a narratological analysis of the embedded narratives in Ovid's Metamorphoses. The focus of the analysis will be, firstly, the identification of the argument-function (explanatory, predictive, thematic, persuasive, and/or distracting) of each embedded narrative, thus allowing a systematisation of these narratives in the poem. Secondly, we will examine the results of the secondary narratives within the primary narrative through an assessment of the focalisation of the primary narrator and, most importantly, the secondary narrators regarding a given embedded narrative. Thereby, we intend to shed light on the dynamics between the poem's primary narrator and his secondary narrators and, ultimately, on the way in which Ovid thematises the narrative act in the Metamorphoses.
