Abstract

This project aims to carry out a study on the condition of black womanhood in the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Jesus Crucified between 1986-2004, highlighting the intersections of race, class, gender and sexuality. We consider the changes that have taken place at the heart of the Church, promoted by the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), in the social sphere, the emergence of the feminist movement, which influences the attitudes of religious, without, however, making use of terminology. These changes led to an awakening to a new racial consciousness, when the classes that divided them into oblate sisters and choristers were abolished, when they rescued black history and identity, and when they became involved in anti-racist activism. In order to achieve the scope of this study, we propose black feminism as a theoretical contribution, using the category of intersectionality as the illuminating beacon. We are relying on the methodology of black feminist activist research combined with life history, consisting of semi-structured interviews, bibliographical research, analysis of ecclesiastical and Congregational documents, in order to provide unpublished data and sources that can answer the question of this study.
