Abstract

This project proposes the application of genomic tools to assist in the conservation of three endangered endemic bird species in Brazil: Guaruba guarouba, Columbina cyanopis, and Odontophorus capueira plumbeicollis. The methodology involves genomic sequencing of the three species, using samples from both wild and captive birds. Analyses of wild individuals aim to characterize population structure and genetic diversity. Assessment of relatedness and recommendations for captive breeding pairings aim to minimize inbreeding and preserve genetic diversity. Expected results include the identification of genetically differentiated groups that may justify the establishment of important geographic areas for conservation and more informed management of captive populations. Additionally, simulations of future scenarios will be conducted to assess the risk of extinction and help guide strategies to be adopted. This study is expected to directly contribute to the conservation of these endangered species in collaboration with several research and conservation institutions in Brazil.
