Abstract

This project deals with the use of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to study, through mathematical modeling and numerical simulation, the transport phenomena that occur in liquid-vapour phase change problems with heat transfer at almost critical reduced temperatures (0.75 < Tr < 0.98). The LBM is a simulation method at mesoscopic scales that is being widely used in ourresearch group to simulate liquid-gas phase change problems with and without heat transfer in confined geometries and microchannels (Czelusniak et al., 2020, 2022; Guzella et al., 2021;Mapelli et al., 2022, Jaramillo et al., 2022; and others). The subproject deals specifically with the simulation of nucleate and convective boiling problems of real fluids at near-critical temperatures. To date, to the best of the proponents' knowledge, the LBM has been used to perform qualitative simulations of these problems. This involves the pseudopotential and phase field LBM. In the project it is proposed perform simulations of nucleate and convective boiling processes in real operating conditions to carry out a careful comparison with the experimental available results. Comparisons with previous works can also be carried out. The project considers the development and use of phase field LBM to simulate the proposed problems. A thorough study of the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations modeling with the lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE)should be performed in order to establish the procedure for simulating a boiling process with the phase field LBM. The results to be obtained with the methodology will be compared withexperimental data of pool boiling obtained at Universidade da Coruña (UDC), and then withchannel convective boiling data for hydrocarbons to be obtained in the group of Prof. Ribatski, considering almost critical reduced temperatures.
