Abstract

Scaling and root planing (SRP) is the treatment of choice for non-surgical management of periodontal disease. However, this therapy may present limitations and failures when used alone in certain clinical cases. Therefore, alternative therapies have been investigated to overcome SRPdeficiencies that may be related to limited access to the root surface during treatment, thepersistent presence of periodontopathogens in deeper pockets and the ability of some bacteria toinvade adjacent tissues. Among these therapies, ozone therapy has been used as an adjunctivetreatment to SRP. The application of ozone can occur in different ways, such as gas insufflation, ozonized water, or even the use of ozonized oils. The ozonized oils combines the antimicrobialproperties of ozone with the benefits of vegetable oils. Thus, the purpose of this study is toevaluate the antimicrobial effect of ozonized sunflower oil in different concentrations on single biofilms of bacteria related to periodontal disease. Single biofilms of Porphyromonas gingivalis will be formed under apropriate conditions for 5 days. Subsequently, the biofilms will be treatedwith 1 minute exposure to pure sunflower oil and ozonized sunflower oil in differentconcentrations: 100%, 50% and 25%. The negative control group will be treated with phosphatebuffered saline (PBS) solution and the positive control group with 0.2% chlorhexidine for 1 minute. Microbiological analysis will be carried out by counting colony-forming units (CFU/mL). Statistical analyzes will consider a significance level of 5% to compare the groups.
