Abstract

The burning of fossil fuels has significantly contributed to climate change through elevated CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. To address this, the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) emerges as a promising approach to convert CO2 into higher-value compounds. This project aims to explore the properties of Au-Cu2O catalysts and light-electrode interactions by studying the CO2RR under in situ/operando conditions, establishing collaborations with renowned experts in the field. The proposed research project includes employing operando X-ray-based techniques, such as XAS, XPS, and XRD, along with morphological characterization, aiming to disentangle the role of excited charge carriers and surface morphology on the CO2RR activity and selectivity. The intention is to integrate findings related to the structural, morphological, and oxidation states of the catalyst with the quantification of gaseous and liquid products under various conditions to provide a comprehensive overview of plasmonic contributions. Through these efforts, the project aims to advance CO2RR research and facilitate the transition towards a more sustainable economy.
