Abstract

The methodology of practical teaching throughout the veterinary medicine course, especially in teaching surgical techniques, is important for the cognitive and motor development of students in the academic environment. Nevertheless, there is a need to emphasize the application of the 3Rs Principle-refine, reduce, replace-in education, in conjunction with bioethical practices. Therefore, this project aims to compare different educational methods applied in the practice of pre-scrotal orchiectomy in dogs during practical classes for undergraduate students. It also seeks to introduce students to basic practices associated with the surgical procedure, including all activities performed during the pre-surgical, trans-surgical, and post-surgical periods, in order to promote the development of motor and cognitive coordination through alternative teaching models. The presentation of the surgical technique for orchiectomy will be carried out using a low-cost practical model (simulator) and tissues that closely resemble the reality imposed by surgical practice (cadaver). However, the use of alternative models allows for an expanded understanding of the surgical technique in a cautious manner, making it possible to ensure theoretical, technical, ethical, and moral principles efficiently and economically.
