Abstract

The research approaches the role of religion in audiovisual productions by Brasil Paralelo, an entertainment company that targets the so-called "conservative" and "right-wing" segments. In pieces addressing feminism and abortion, Brasil Paralelo crafts a discourse on rights by intertwining as linguagens da religião e da ciência. Both languages are currently spoken in disputes over the meanings and contours of life and death, freedom, and crime. Inspired by the discussion about nonreligion, I am interested in understanding the linguistic effects of the uses of religious language in a secular setting.
