Abstract

This research project aims to examine the meanings of the concept of autonomy of art as employed by Lukács in his Introduction to a Marxist Aesthetics. The objective is to investigate the specific logical-conceptual framework that allows him to develop a conception of aesthetic behavior that presents the notions of "autonomy of the work of art" and "social function of art" - two ideas commonly opposed to one another - as moments of the same unity. To this end, the category of the own world of works of art serves as a strategic key for a proper understanding of Lukács' treatment of this issue. Thus, along with Lukács' text and the commentary literature, we develop the hypothesis that this category, by virtue of its position and resonance, carries the link that makes it possible for autonomy and social function to coincide within the sensitive structure of works of art.
