Abstract

This research project aims to study basic concepts of phase transitions and Monte Carlo techniques, applying them to the multi-state clock model and the XY model on the square lattice with nearest and next-nearest frustrating neighbors. More specifically, the Landau mean-field theory, the finite-size scaling theory, the Metropolis, Heat bath and thermal bath local update algorithms, the Swendsen-Wang and Wolff non-local update algorithms, and, finally, the order-by-disorder mechanism will all be studied.
