Abstract

At the end of the 19th century, the change in the demographic profile of Portuguese immigration into Brazilian lands was characterized by the entry of working families driven by work opportunities in rural areas, which favored a significant increase in the number of women and children in the definitive emigration process, no longer centered on male and single labor. The increase in female participation in immigration to Brazil not only changed the demography, but also culturally and politically impacted the social spheres of their destinations and origins, both in public and domestic spaces, often in a silent (and silenced) way. Bearing this in mind, this research project seeks to observe and analyze the facets of femininity in Portuguese immigration from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, its representations in the official documents of the Portuguese State and its speeches, with the aim of understanding the meaning and the importance of female participation in this process.
