Abstract

The presence and function of cellular components of the innate and adaptive arms of the immune response appear to be affected differently by volatile and intravenous anesthetics, such as sevoflurane and propofol, respectively, and, consequently, are proposed to have diverse effects in the recovery of post-surgical patients. Since studies in the literature are controversial and, in general, are carried out on patients with more serious diseases (such as cancer) and which, therefore, can cause systemic homeostatic interference, it is interesting to analyze the effects of anesthetics in patients undergoing less invasive surgeries for less aggressive diseases. Although there are reports of anesthetic effects on practically all cell types present in the circulation, the study of their effects on dendritic cells is very attractive. These cells are essential for recruiting T lymphocytes and are, apparently, the main ones, if not the only ones, capable of triggering naïve T lymphocyte responses. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the effects of two anesthetics - representing the group of volatile and intravenous anesthetics - on the frequency of different cell types found in the blood and, especially, on the differentiation and function of dendritic cells derived from monocytes.
