Analysis of Anxiety and Pain in Patients Undergoing Endodontic Treatment at SICOD (Integrated System of Dental Clinics)

Abstract

Fear and anxiety are important reasons for avoiding dental treatments, especially endodontic ones, due to the perception of pain and the duration of the procedure. Analysis scales help to understand patients' anxiety and personalize management during treatment. Although conscious sedation is common, its efficacy in patients needing endodontic treatment is still unclear.The aim of the present study is to analyze the anxiety, pain, and perspective of patients who will undergo endodontic treatment at SICOD (Integrated System of Dental Clinics) of FOP-UNICAMP. Furthermore, it seeks to evaluate the level of knowledge these patients have about minimal sedation techniques and their interest in using them in future procedures. To achieve this goal, 250 patients, aged 18 and over, of both genders, will be invited to answer a questionnaire aimed at detecting anxiety, pain, as well as socioeconomic patterns and patient knowledge/interest regarding conscious sedation. The entire research will be conducted at FOP-Unicamp and is expected to be completed in 12 months. The results will be analyzed through simple logistic regression to assess the association between anxiety (dependent variable) and other independent variables, with a significance level of 5%. The crude Odds Ratios and their 95% confidence intervals will be estimated. All statistical analyses will be conducted using the Bioestat 5.0 statistical program.
