Effects of experimental calcium hydroxide paste on Martens hardness and elastic modulus of intraradicular dentin

Abstract

Intracanal medication is an important step in endodontic treatment, primarily in necropulpectomy. However, difficulties are encountered in this process, particularly the resistance of Enterococcus faecalis, which can adapt to hostile environments for bacterial activity, especially due to its proton pump at the cellular level that regulates internal pH and prevents the calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)¿] medication used from being fully effective. Therefore, investigations into an experimental paste of Ca(OH)¿ associated with a proton pump inhibitor appear promising in endodontics. The objective of this research project will be to evaluate the influence of an experimental Ca(OH)¿ medication containing proton pump inhibitors, either agitated or not within the root canal using ultrasound (US). The biomechanical preparation (BMP) will be performed on all teeth. A total of 48 bovine teeth will be used, distributed into 6 experimental groups (n=8): G1-BMP + Propylene Glycol (Control); G2-BMP + Propylene Glycol + US; G3-BMP + Ca(OH)¿; G4-BMP + Ca(OH)¿ + US; G5-BMP + experimental Ca(OH)¿; G6-BMP + experimental Ca(OH)¿ + US. The mechanical properties of Martens hardness and the elastic modulus of the intraradicular dentin will be evaluated using a digital ultra-microdurometer, under a load of 3 mN, at different root thirds of each specimen. The data obtained will be subjected to normality tests, and the means will be compared using specific statistical tests (¿=0.05).
