Abstract

Introduction: Cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) is the abrupt interruption of cardiac and pulmonary function, representing a cardiovascular emergency. The outcomes associated with in-hospital CPA are significantly better than out-of-hospital CPA cases. Delayed recognition of CPA by bystanders and failure to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are the main causes of this unfavorable outcome. Therefore, it is essential to implement, in a systematic and evidence-based manner, Basic Life Support (BLS), which organizes a chain of survival with initial practices necessary to save lives. Thus, theoretical-practical training is the most effective way to acquire lay knowledge about BLS. Objective: To describe the implementation of a simulated training protocol for basic life support for CPA victims for the lay population, and to evaluate its effectiveness in acquiring knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy. Methods: Pilot study with a quasi-experimental design, of the pre- and post-test type. The study will be conducted in locations with high levels of human traffic in a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo, such as airports, bus stations, and bus terminals. Participants will be employees of the study collection sites, over 18 years of age, and considered laypeople in CPR. Data collection will be conducted in three phases: 1. Pre-implementation phase: a group of interventionists will be created to receive training in BLS; 2. Implementation phase: training will be conducted by trained interventionists in the defined locations through a theoretical approach followed by a previously validated simulation. Participants will undergo sociodemographic data collection, assessment of knowledge, CPR skills, and self-efficacy before and immediately after the strategy. 3. Maintenance and follow-up phase: printed educational material aimed at the lay population will be given to study participants for distribution in the aforementioned locations. A descriptive analysis of the sociodemographic characterization variables will be performed. To assess self-efficacy, training effectiveness, knowledge, and skills acquired, the paired Student's t-test or paired Wilcoxon test will be applied, according to the data distribution. A significance level of 5% will be adopted.
