Abstract

This project aims to analyze the seven Canon Tables, which are the set of Gospel passages that correspond to each other and are grouped in a graphic-ornamental scheme, present in the Saint-Bénigne Bible of Dijon. Produced in the 12th century in the scriptorium of the Abbey of Saint-Bénigne in Dijon, this manuscript is currently preserved in the Municipal Library of Dijon, France, under the number 2. The intention is to investigate the functioning of the ornamentation in the images of this set, which exhibit a series of peculiarities compared to other examples and operate under a strong notion of variation and variety from one folio to another. Consequently, in a broader movement, the aim is to position the analysis of the Canon Tables of this manuscript in relation to the long tradition of their presence in medieval manuscripts, through a thematic cutout of the iconographic theme of combat, observing how BM Dijon 2 approaches and diverges from it and what this may indicate about the period of its production.
