Abstract What is the effect of age on postmaterialist and democratic values in Brasil? The rise of a new democratic wave in several countries and the subsequent fall and reversal of some experiences encouraged several studies that sought to understand how these regimes are born and maintained. In the political culture field, concern turned for the distribution of orientations and behaviors. Under this approach, Ronald Inglehart brought important contributions by revisiting the development theory and creating the concept of post-materialism. In previous research, I explored this concept in Brazil and the results pointed to a greater tendency of adherence among young people; and also inter-cohort differences in support for democratic elements. However, there are different reasons for why age influences values. Here, I aim to understand whether these differences in adherence to post-materialism and democratic values among cohorts in Brazil can be explained by other dimensions beyond the generational replacement presented by Inglehart in his human development theory. To this end, we will use the APC (Age, Period and Cohort effects) approach, which allows a more robust understanding of age, period and cohort effects on values emphasized by different generations. | |
