Effects of extended glaze firing on the mechanical behavior of a leucite-based ceramic

Abstract

Extended glaze firings are capable of healing defects and increasing the mechanical properties of glass-ceramics when self-glazing is performed. However, the effects of longer firing times (i.e., holding times) when a glaze layer is added (overglaze) are still unknown. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of extended firing on the flexural strength of a leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic when self-glazing or overglazing techniques are performed. For this purpose, blocks of a leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic (IPS Empress CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) will be rounded into cylinders and then sliced into discs. A polishing sequence will be performed on the discs using 400, 600 and 1200 grit sandpaper. The discs will be divided into 4 groups, according to the treatment: application of a glaze layer (overglaze) and firing for 1 min, application of a glaze layer (overglaze) and firing for 15 min, glaze firing (self-glaze) for 1 min, or glaze firing (self-glaze) for 15 min. The specimens will be subjected to the piston-on-three-ball flexural strength test and the fracture surfaces will be subjected to fractographic analysis. Complementary analyses of roughness (parameters Ra and Rz), translucency (TP00), color change (¿E00) and X-ray diffraction will be performed to understand the results
