Abstract

The hyaline ring granuloma is a granulomatous inflammatory reaction characterized by foreign body-type giant cells and eosinophilic ring-shaped structures, often accompanied by fibrosis, macrophages, and other inflammatory cells. It is believed that the cause is the implantation of plant particles in the tissue. Due to the nonspecific clinical characteristics and the relative unfamiliarity among clinicians, it is rarely considered in the differential diagnoses of oral lesions. When associated with other lesions, it can be underdiagnosed or complicate the histopathological diagnosis due to its similarity with other structures. The aim of this study is to analyze cases of hyaline ring granuloma diagnosed over the past 20 years in the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Laboratory of our institution, contributing to the clinicopathological characterization of this lesion and evaluating the relationship between marsupialization of cystic lesions and its occurrence. Confirmed cases of hyaline ring granuloma will be reviewed histologically, including data on age, sex, duration, symptomatology, primary lesion, radiographic appearance, and final diagnosis. The number of granulomas, presence of calcification and osseous metaplasia, and the number of CD68-positive cells will be analyzed. Additionally, polarized slides and those stained with PAS or Masson's trichrome will be qualitatively evaluated. Cases of biopsies after marsupialization will also be reviewed for the presence of hyaline ring granulomas. Demographic and clinical data will be tabulated and statistically analyzed using the chi-square test and Fisher's exact test to evaluate the association between clinical and demographic variables, considering statistical significance for p<0.05.
