Abstract

Background: Early diagnosis is crucial for the successful treatment of gastric, esophageal, and colorectal cancer. Endoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosis, and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) emerges as a promising technique for the resection of precancerous and early-stage cancerous lesions. ESD is a technique developed in Japan to remove superficial lesions of the gastric, esophageal, and colonic mucosa, which has the advantages of being minimally invasive, resecting large lesions with a good safety margin, and therefore having a low recurrence rate. However, it is a procedure that requires advanced endoscopic skills. Due to its origin and also to the high rates of early gastric lesions, Eastern countries have vast experience in ESD; whereas, in the West, courses related to this topic are scarce. Finally, there is no standardization in the performance evaluation after ESD workshops and, also, few courses offer feedback on the student's performance, which makes it difficult to determine the degree of expertise of the participants and hinders the progress of the students by not identifying errors and techniques to be improved. Objectives: To develop performance assessment and self-assessment criteria for a practical (hands-on) ESD course. Materials and Methods: This is the development of an evaluation product for specific application in a practical (hands-on) ESD course. The study will be developed at the Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde Dr Paulo Prata (FACISB) and at the IRCAD Latin America in Barretos-SP, through the application of questionnaires to endoscopist students to verify the knowledge and expertise acquired during the workshop through variables related to theoretical and practical knowledge involving the i identification of factors related to technical skill, with subsequent analysis by a qualified professional team anonymously.
