Abstract

Respiratory infections are common causes of morbidity and mortality in children. The most common clinical presentations and symptoms are fever, runny nose, andcough, which can lead to more serious respiratory failure. Several pathogens cancause respiratory infections, with viruses being the most common. Among theviruses, Adenoviruses (hAdV) are commonly found in children in early childhoodand can become fatal the younger the child. There are 51 adenovirus serotypes, withhAdV-3, 4, 7, and 14 being the most common in respiratory infections and hAdV3and hAdV7 being more associated with more severe conditions. In Brazil, there islittle epidemiological data on Adenovirus infections in children, especiallycorrelating the severity of the infection, the prognosis, and the hAdV serotypeinvolved. Still, the number of child fatalities due to respiratory infections issignificant. Furthermore, hAdV is associated with one of the main viruses involved2in nosocomial infections, making this research project important for building therelevance of respiratory infections caused by hAdV in our country, which couldimpact new preventive measures and containment of these infections in hospitals.
