Abstract

Ageing is a natural process that affects all living beings. With advances in veterinary medicine, dogs have been living longer and longer and are more likely to reach old age. Pathological ageing is a degenerative process that affects the functions of various organs and tissues, including the central nervous system. Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CCDS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder analogous to Alzheimer's Disease (AD) in humans, characterized by the accumulation of beta-amyloid protein (ABeta), hyperphosphorylation of tau protein (Tau) and neuroinflammation, which leads to neurodegeneration. Although, to date, there is no effective treatment for CCPS, multimodal therapies aim to attenuate the clinical signs and slow down the progression of the disease. In this context, fisetin, a natural flavonoid, appears to be a promising treatment, given that its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are already well described in the literature. Fisetin therapy has been studied for AD for its senolytic, neuroprotective and neurotrophic activity, with the potential to improve cognition. Due to these properties, fisetin is a promising therapy for the treatment of CCPS.
