POSTOPERATIVE RESULTS OF VENA CAVA FILTER IMPLANTATION PROCEDURES IN ONCOLOGICAL PATIENTS

Abstract

The relationship between neoplasia and thromboembolism is well established, either through the presence of related risk factors (chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, immobilization, implantation of venous catheters, extrinsic deep venous compression), or because of the possible condition of the hypercoagulable state that has not yet been fully elucidated. Approximately 15% of patients with neoplasia may present venous thromboembolic phenomena, which are the second cause of death in this population. The treatment of venous thromboembolism, both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is based on anticoagulation. However, situations often occur in which anticoagulant therapy is contraindicated. The main contraindications for anticoagulation are active hemorrhage, need for invasive procedures, recent major surgeries, occurrence of pulmonary embolism during adequate anticoagulation, and persistent thrombocytopenia. When anticoagulation is contraindicated, implantation of a vena cava filter is necessary to prevent PE.The objective of this research project is to evaluate patients with neoplasia who received vena cava filters at the São Paulo State Cancer Institute in relation to the implantation procedure and postoperative follow-up.
