Abstract

Geoconservation consists of a set of procedures and actions developed to conserve and safeguard geological heritage. Generally, these actions are grouped into the following sequential stages: inventory, quantitative assessment, conservation, interpretation and promotion, and monitoring. European countries, such as Spain, have approached geological heritage management by focusing on the development of methods and guidelines for the conservation and monitoring of geological sites. Within this context, this BEPE proposal presents a work plan to be developed at the Department of Geological Heritage of the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (Instituto Geológico y Minero de España - IGME). The main goal aim of this plan is to recognise and analyse methodologies applied to the conservation and monitoring of geosites that form part of Spain's geological heritage. The implementation of project will include stages of bibliographical research, as well as review and analysis of criteria and methods used for identifying monitoring indicator systems applicable to geosites; conducting fieldwork to assess monitoring techniques applied in different environments and geological contexts. Subsequently, possible correlations will be identified between the different geological contexts of geosites studied in Spain and the geosites in the geological heritage inventory of the state of São Paulo. Finally, guidelines will be issued for a monitoring plan and for assessing the evolution of conservation status applicable to the geological heritage inventory of São Paulo.
