Abstract

The present research proposal focuses on understanding the geomorphological dynamics of coastal plateaus associated with Barreiras sediments in the southern state of Alagoas, specifically in the lower courses of the hydrographic basins of the Coruripe, Piauí, and Perucaba rivers, where they are most spatially significant. The central objective is to comprehend, through surface coverings, the genesis and geomorphological dynamics of the southern sector of coastal plateaus in Alagoas associated with the Barreiras Formation and Post-Barreiras Sediments during the Quaternary, and their implications for the current landscape configuration. The underlying hypothesis is that sediment analysis will provide evidence of changes in paleoclimatic conditions from the Pleistocene to the Holocene. The justification for this study lies in the scarcity of detailed research on Quaternary events in the region concerning Post-Barreiras sediments, which played a significant role in shaping the relief. The proposal combines a systemic approach with morphostratigraphic and geochemical analyses to understand paleoenvironmental dynamics and contribute to the reconstruction of the landscape from the past. The literature review presented emphasizes the importance of the Quaternary in geomorphological studies, morphostratigraphic analysis, and a brief discussion of the Barreiras Formation.
