Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Kidney Disease is characterized by kidney damage and a gradual, irreversible loss of their functions, making it a public health issue. In its terminal stage, dialysis treatment is required, with hemodialysis being the most common. Patients undergoing hemodialysis often face biopsychosocial challenges. Given this context, it is important to understand the family structure and functionality, as well as the social support of these patients. Objective: Analyze the family structure and functionality and the social support of elder people undergoing hemodialysis. Method: This is an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study with a quantitative approach to be conducted in a renal replacement therapy unit in the interior of São Paulo State. The study will involve individual interviews in a designated room within the service facility. Upon agreeing to participate, participants will sign an informed consent form. The following instruments will then be applied: sociodemographic, economic, and health conditions questionnaire; the Elderl Minimum Relationship Map (MMRI); the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale (MOS); the family APGAR and genogram. All ethical principles will be respected. Results: The study aims to understand the family structure and functionality, and the perception of social support received by elder patients on hemodialysis. Descriptive, correlation, and observational analyses will be conducted.
