Abstract

Breast milk is the essential basis for infant nutrition in the first months of life and continues to be a valuable food as the infant grows, offering benefits to both the infant and the nursing mother. Although the benefits of breastfeeding are widely recognized, its practice lacks significant adherence. Among the factors that influence the low prevalence of breastfeeding is nipple trauma, a common type of breast complication. Scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of pharmacological interventions in the treatment of nipple trauma is limited. There are suggestions about the potential benefits of lanolin, as it creates a favorable environment to prevent skin lesions, stimulate epithelial growth and reduce nipple pain. This study aims to analyze the use of purified lanolin as a therapeutic intervention in nipple trauma and the practice of breastfeeding among nursing mothers using services in the municipal health network of Ribeirão Preto-SP. This is a descriptive, retrospective study with a quantitative approach that will be developed in the city of Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo, within the Municipal Health Department, together with the Breastfeeding Coordination Office, based on secondary data. The results are expected to contribute to maternal and child health, reduce early weaning and improve the experience of breastfeeding mothers.
