Abstract

In the second half of the 19th century, the traditional Portuguese emigration intensified in significant numbers. Especially with the increase in family emigration after the 1870s and 1880s, the number of Portuguese women in Brazil also grew significantly. Despite the intensification of female displacement and its cultural, social and symbolic impact, women were made invisible in official records and in various historiographical works. The documents produced by representatives of the Portuguese state during the period in question are materials that contributed to shaping gender representations, reinforcing the ideal roles and identities associated with the performativity of both sexes. In this way, the research aims to analyze official discourses, seeking to understand how the actions of political power contributed to shaping gender relations at the time, especially in the transnational context. The aim is to offer new perspectives on the history of Luso-Brazilian migration, highlighting female agency through the interpretation and decoding of the discourses present in the documentation.
