Abstract

Emotional intelligence (EI) is a psychological construct that comprises the capacities of emotional perception, emotional facilitation of thought, emotional understanding, and emotional management. EI is present in the most varied contexts, given that certain emotions and emotional responses are more frequently evoked in specific situations. The sports context is one of them, more specifically that of university sports, which lacks research on emotional aspects and whose athletes have greater psychological needs compared to professionals, especially in moments of competition. Therefore, this study intends to evaluate emotional aspects and abilities of university athletes before and after a competition. The sample will be composed of 30 athletes from a university athletic team, inicially includind the women's volleyball, men's basketball, athletics and water polo university teams. Four collections will be made at different times, from preparation to post-competition, in which the following aspects of EI will be evaluated: emotional understanding, positive and negative affects, and emotional regulation, relating them to the self-perception of performance in the sport. To this end, psychometric EI instruments and a questionnaire of self-perception of performance in sport will be used. The results will be stored in a database and initially analyzed with descriptive statistics to verify the distribution of the scores. To study the variation of emotional aspects over time, analysis of variance (ANOVA) by repeated measures will be used.
