Abstract

Hormonal implant with gestrinone have been receiving attention for gynecologic and image enhancement purposes in young women. Even though some studies have demonstrated a negative association between anabolic androgenic steroids misuse and cardiovascular health in men, little is known about the use of hormonal implant with gestrinone on cardiovascular health in young women. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the association between the use of the hormonal implant with gestrinone on endothelial function in young women, as well as other cardiovascular outcomes. Our hypothesis is that this use can reduce endothelial function and be associated with other cardiovascular outcome impairments. This is a cross-sectional study with young women sampled by convenience. Participants are allocated into implant with gestrinone (current use) or control (never have used any type of hormonal implant) groups. Endothelial function is measured by flow-mediated dilation technique. Other cardiovascular (pulse-wave velocity, cardiac autonomic modulation, heart rate, and blood pressure), laboratory (sexual hormone levels, lipid profile, glycemia, inflammation, hemoglobin, and hematocrit), and muscle strength (handgrip) exams have been performed. These results, assessed by a multidisciplinary team, may contribute in a national and international context through academic production translated into original articles, academic conference presentations and new study designs. Also, these results may have a straightforward clinical application providing information to shared clinical decision and public policy making.
