Abstract

Analyzing the production of space in favelas makes it increasingly clear that the dynamics of the real estate market need to be carefully studied. Understanding the real estate market in favelas requires repositioning the centrality of production in the whole process. This reorientation has important repercussions for understanding the spatial and social structure of favelas, their dynamics and the way we can conceive and evaluate public policies. The research objectives are: 1) Elaborate new analytical keys to advance knowledge about the characteristics, functioning and structure of real estate markets in favelas today; 2) Develop theoretical approaches to advance understanding of the dynamics and the various agents involved in new forms of real estate development and self-production (including drug trafficking and militias), and their relationship with processes of reprecarization in the contemporary favela; 3) Explore new methodological approaches (quantitative and qualitative) to advance empirical research on real estate markets in precarious settlements and favelas.
