Abstract

The formation of malignant tumors is a multifactorial phenomenon involving a series of agents and stages, known as oncogenesis or carcinogenesis. Its progression is primarily related to alterations in cellular physiological processes that regulate differentiation, proliferation, angiogenesis, metastasis, and programmed cell death (INCA, 2021). Osteosarcoma is a type of cancer characterized by the development of a malignant tumor in the bones, causing structural changes and functional impairment. The treatment of osteosarcoma has improved over the decades, leading to increased patient survival (ANDERSON, 2016). However, there is still a need for alternative therapeutic strategies, justifying the search for phytochemicals due to their structural diversity and various mechanisms of action. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester is a polyphenol derived from caffeic acid that exhibits antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Preliminary results demonstrate a significant reduction in cellular viability in groups treated with this compound, responsible for reducing viability by approximately 97.9% in osteosarcoma cells. Thus, in line with recent studies (PAGNAN et al., 2022), CAPE shows a dose and time-dependent antitumor effect on osteosarcoma cells, reducing tumor viability compared to the control group, highlighting its promising effectiveness as a potential adjunct in cancer treatment.
