Abstract

A significant portion of the Brazilian population lives in favelas, and urbanization has been the main form of intervention in these areas. Although these initiatives have contributed to improving the quality of life, various studies show that they rarely achieve high standards of quality or fully solve the existing challenges. Slums are constantly changing and, in the context of metropolitan regions, there are changes in their dynamics and characteristics that need to be understood in order to improve public urbanization policies. Given this scenario, this research aims to analyze the characteristics and transformations of the Heliópolis favela, based on the systematization and analysis of IBGE census data from 2000, 2010 and 2022. The research seeks to provide an understanding of the impacts of urban interventions, the evolution of housing conditions and the challenges that remain. (AU)
