Abstract

Auxetic structures are defined as those that possess a property referred to as negative Poisson's ratio (PR). The PR is defined as the ratio between the lateral and longitudinal deformations in a material under the action of a longitudinal stress. Consequently, auxetic materials are characterized by an inherent tendency to undergo expansion (or contraction) when subjected to tensile (or compressive) forces. It is noteworthy that most materials exhibit a positive PR, indicating that they tend to expand (or contract) when subjected to longitudinal stress. However, the literature also highlights the existence of structures that manifest auxeticity irrespective of their material composition. The present project involves the computational and atomistic study of auxetic nanokirigami, defined as planar nanostructures cut in the shape of models of known auxetic structures. The nanostructures selected for investigation are graphene and titanium-carbon MXenes. The results of this study can be disseminated through scientific publications.
