Abstract

The self-organizing systems of interest in this project may exhibit multiple interacting timescales. For example, in physical systems composed of many interacting particles, the rate at which energy is dissipated by individual particles can differ significantly from the timescale governing their mutual interactions. These mismatches become even more pronounced in systems where particles have heterogeneous masses. To better understand the role of such timescale mismatches, we propose, at the undergraduate research level, an investigation into the effects of multiple timescales in networks of coupled oscillators. Specifically, we will examine systems in which both the network topology and the internal timescales of the oscillators are distributed according to power laws. Within this framework, the undergraduate student will explore whether such complex networks can exhibit the phenomenon of resonance. (AU)
